Community Wellness Plan

The Government of Northwest Territories and Acho Dene Koe First Nation are working together to improve community health in Echaot’l Koe (Fort Liard) through a Community Wellness Plan. This plan takes a holistic approach, addressing physical, mental, emotional, social, cultural, spiritual, and environmental well-being, and recognizes that Indigenous health is shaped by interconnected factors such as relationships, infrastructure, culture, and self-determination.
Historical and ongoing impacts of colonization have led to significant health disparities for Indigenous communities, including higher rates of chronic disease, limited access to services, and economic challenges. Addressing these issues requires trauma-informed, culturally relevant strategies focused on community, culture, land, and autonomy.
The Wellness Plan outlines programs informed by Dene perspectives, aiming to help individuals and the community thrive together. It also supports reconciliation goals, aligning with Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action #13-24 and UNDRIP Articles 23 and 24, which emphasize Indigenous-led approaches to health and cultural preservation. Holistic wellness is essential for building strong, self-sustaining Indigenous communities in the North.
