First Nations Transparency Act
First Nations Transparency Act
The First Nations Financial Transparency Act (FNFTA) is a federal law that strengthens accountability and transparency in First Nations governance by requiring the annual public disclosure of audited consolidated financial statements and the remuneration and expenses of Chiefs and Councillors. The Act applies to First Nations defined as “bands” under the Indian Act and ensures that financial information—such as salaries, travel expenses, and the performance of band‑controlled entities—is accessible to community members and the public. These disclosures must be posted on a First Nation’s website as well as on the Government of Canada’s site, supporting informed decision‑making, responsible leadership, and transparent financial management.
Acho Dene Koe First Nation meets FNFTA standards by making its audited financial statements and Schedule of Remuneration and Expenses available to members and publishing them online annually by October 31.
